A recent survey conducted by Populix among 840 professional workers in Indonesia has unveiled a significant evolution in the motivations behind engaging in physical activity. No longer solely focused on maintaining physical health, exercise has increasingly become a multifaceted aspect of the modern Indonesian worker’s lifestyle, serving as a crucial avenue for social interaction, building professional networks, enjoying quality time, and even acting as a de-stressing activity and a social hub after demanding workdays. The findings highlight a departure from traditional fitness goals, underscoring a growing desire for holistic well-being that encompasses mental and social health.
The survey, which primarily drew respondents from the productive age group of 26-36 years with a medium to upper-middle-class economic background, indicates a pronounced shift in the driving forces behind people’s commitment to exercise. A substantial number of professionals are now utilizing sports and physical activities as a means to escape the pressures of their jobs and, concurrently, to foster new connections and strengthen existing relationships.
Exercise as a Social and Mental Sanctuary
Retno Gumelar, Quantitative Research Manager at Populix, articulated this evolving perspective during the Populix Time-Out Briefing held in Jakarta on Monday, May 26th. "Exercise is now not just about physical health, but it has also become a social space," Gumelar stated. She further elaborated that this trend is deeply intertwined with the urban lifestyle adopted by many Indonesian professionals, whose daily lives are often characterized by tight deadlines and demanding work routines.
The Populix survey data provides concrete evidence for this assertion. A significant 60 percent of respondents reported engaging in physical activity for "me time," emphasizing the importance of dedicated personal time for self-care and rejuvenation. Following closely, 53 percent of participants indicated that they utilize exercise as an opportunity for "quality time" with their partners or families, underscoring the role of sports in strengthening personal bonds.
Beyond immediate personal and familial benefits, the survey also reveals a strong inclination towards leveraging exercise for professional advancement. A notable 40 percent of respondents admitted to using their sporting activities to build relationships and expand their professional networks. This suggests a strategic integration of fitness into career development, where shared interests in sports can bridge professional gaps and foster mutually beneficial connections. Furthermore, 39 percent of respondents identified exercise as an activity undertaken with friends, reinforcing its function as a social lubricant and a means of maintaining friendships.
The Post-Workout Social Ritual
The social dimension of exercise is further illuminated by the habits observed after participants have completed their physical activities. A substantial 39 percent of respondents indicated a preference for socializing, such as "hanging out" or enjoying coffee, immediately following their workouts. This practice highlights the emergence of post-exercise gatherings as a distinct social ritual, akin to after-work drinks or weekend brunches. Additionally, 37 percent of respondents reported dining with friends or their respective sports communities, further solidifying the idea that exercise is a catalyst for shared experiences and camaraderie.
Consistency Remains a Hurdle Amidst High Health Consciousness

Despite the clear motivations and the growing social integration of exercise, the survey also pointed to a persistent challenge: maintaining consistency. Over 80 percent of respondents affirmed that they exercise regularly, a testament to a high level of health awareness among Indonesian professionals. However, the ability to adhere to a disciplined routine remains a significant hurdle.
Factors such as the inherent flexibility of work hours, the geographical location of offices, and unpredictable work schedules were cited as major impediments to maintaining a consistent exercise regimen. Gumelar explained, "It’s not that they don’t want to live healthily, but they are often hindered by work and time." This statement encapsulates the reality for many professionals who find their best intentions derailed by the demands of their careers.
Emergence of Flexible and Community-Driven Sports
In response to these challenges, there is a growing demand for sports activities that offer flexibility and can be seamlessly integrated into daily routines. While traditional activities like jogging and walking remain popular due to their accessibility and low barrier to entry, sports that foster community and social interaction are witnessing a notable surge in popularity. These include activities such as padel, yoga, Pilates, and diving.
The rising appeal of racket sports, including badminton and padel, is particularly noteworthy. These sports are increasingly recognized not only for their physical health benefits but also for their inherent opportunities for social interaction and networking. The dynamic nature of these games, often played in pairs or small groups, naturally encourages communication, teamwork, and the formation of bonds. The growing popularity of padel, a sport that combines elements of tennis and squash, exemplifies this trend, offering a fun and engaging way to stay active while connecting with others.
Economic Implications: Increased Spending on Fitness
This evolving trend in exercise habits has also translated into increased consumer spending on sports-related products and services. Professionals are demonstrating a greater willingness to invest in their active lifestyles. The survey found that approximately 72 percent of respondents regularly purchase athletic apparel, while 67 percent invest in sports footwear. Furthermore, a significant 30 percent are investing in wearable technology such as smartwatches and fitness trackers, underscoring a conscious effort to monitor their health and performance. This indicates a maturing market for fitness-related goods and services, driven by a workforce that views exercise as a vital component of their overall well-being and social engagement.
The Path Forward: Accessibility and Integration
In conclusion, the Populix survey underscores that Indonesian professionals possess a strong awareness of the importance of health. The primary obstacle is not a lack of desire but rather the practical challenge of integrating exercise into demanding and often unpredictable work lives. The future of fitness for this demographic likely lies in accessible, flexible, and socially oriented activities that can be easily woven into the fabric of their daily routines. As the understanding of health expands to encompass mental and social well-being, sports and physical activities are poised to play an even more central role in shaping the lifestyle of the modern Indonesian professional. The shift from a purely fitness-centric approach to one that embraces social connection and stress relief signals a more holistic and sustainable engagement with physical activity.
