Bahaya Tren Makan Mentega Langsung di Media Sosial: Pakar Gizi Peringatkan Risiko Kesehatan Jantung dan Pencernaan

The allure of viral food trends on social media platforms such as TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube often blurs the line between culinary creativity and nutritional hazard. In recent months, a peculiar and alarming phenomenon has captured the attention of millions worldwide, including in Indonesia: consuming whole blocks of butter directly or slathering foods in exceptionally thick, unmeasured layers of butter and margarine. Often paired with decadent toppings like chocolate mousse, heavy sweet sauces, or rich pasta drippings, these viral eating challenges are visually striking and designed to maximize engagement. However, behind the aesthetic appeal and high view counts lies a serious public health concern. Nutrition and health experts have begun issuing urgent warnings regarding the hidden dangers of consuming concentrated fats in such reckless quantities.

The Rise of the Butter-Eating Craze and Social Media Influence

The chronology of this trend traces back to the broader movement of "hyper-indulgent" or "asmr mukbang" content, where creators push the boundaries of extreme eating for shock value. Initially rooted in niche keto or carnivore diet communities that promoted high-fat intake, the trend mutated on mainstream algorithms. Content creators began treating butter not merely as a cooking medium or a spread, but as the main star of the dish. Videos featuring individuals biting directly into sticks of chilled butter, sometimes dipped in honey, sugar, or cheese, quickly amassed millions of views.

As the trend crossed over into mainstream food media in Indonesia, local food enthusiasts began replicating heavy butter applications, prompting immediate concern from the academic and medical communities. The fear of missing out, commonly known as FOMO, drives many young consumers to blindly copy these viral habits without understanding the physiological consequences of ingesting pure, concentrated animal or vegetable fats in single sittings.

Nutritional Breakdown: High Energy Density and Fat Profiles

To comprehend why eating butter directly poses a health threat, one must examine its biochemical composition. Professor Sri Anna Marliyati, a leading expert from the Department of Community Nutrition at the Faculty of Human Ecology, IPB University, emphasized that the public must exercise critical thinking rather than blindly following digital fads.

"Margining and butter are extremely energy-dense sources of fat," Professor Sri Anna explained in an official release by IPB University. "A single gram of fat yields approximately nine kilocalories. Consequently, consuming large quantities directly can rapidly spike total energy intake far beyond daily recommended thresholds."

Furthermore, the structural difference between butter and margarine dictates how they affect the body. Traditional butter is derived from dairy and is predominantly composed of saturated fats, which are known to elevate low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol levels when consumed in excess. On the other hand, soft margarines are typically manufactured from plant-based oils, containing a higher proportion of unsaturated fats. However, commercially available margarines may also harbor trans fats depending on the hydrogenation processes used during manufacturing. Regardless of the type, consuming either product in massive, unmeasured blocks bypasses the culinary moderation required for a healthy diet.

Immediate Physiological Impact: Gastrointestinal Distress

The human digestive system is not evolutionarily or physiologically equipped to process massive boluses of pure fat efficiently. When an individual consumes a large amount of butter or margarine at once, the physiological consequences manifest rapidly within the gastrointestinal tract.

High-fat meals significantly delay gastric emptying—the rate at which food leaves the stomach and enters the small intestine. Following a heavy butter-eating stunt, individuals frequently report feeling overly full, sluggish, nauseous, or suffering from acute indigestion and bloating.

Moreover, the influx of dense fat triggers an intense physiological response in the biliary system. "Highly fatty foods stimulate strong contractions of the gallbladder," Professor Sri Anna noted. "For individuals with underlying conditions such as gallstones or other gallbladder dysfunctions, consuming sudden, high-fat meals can provoke severe abdominal pain, colic, or intense discomfort."

Long-Term Cardiovascular and Metabolic Implications

While the immediate discomfort of indigestion passes within hours, the cumulative long-term effects of participating in such dietary trends pose severe risks to the cardiovascular and metabolic systems.

Immediately following the consumption of a high-fat meal, blood lipid profiles undergo drastic, temporary fluctuations. Triglyceride levels—a type of fat found in the blood—spike significantly. When a person repeatedly subjects their body to these extreme dietary habits, the transient spikes transform into chronic alterations of blood lipid profiles.

"If this consumption pattern occurs repeatedly, it contributes directly to dyslipidemia, characterized by abnormal amounts of lipids in the blood," Professor Sri Anna warned. "Over time, this significantly elevates the risk of cardiovascular diseases, coronary heart disease, and metabolic disorders."

Medical professionals emphasize that certain demographic groups are exceptionally vulnerable to these risks. Individuals diagnosed with pre-existing conditions, including dislipidemia, coronary heart disease, obesity, diabetes complicated by dyslipidemia, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), and a clinical history of gallbladder disease, must exercise extreme vigilance regarding their dietary fat intake. For these populations, engaging in viral food challenges is not merely unwise; it can be clinically dangerous.

Recontextualizing Dietary Fats within a Balanced Nutritional Framework

To counter the misinformation spread by viral social media content, health authorities urge the public to return to established nutritional guidelines, such as the principles of balanced nutrition. These guidelines advocate for fulfilling daily energy and protein requirements through a diverse array of whole foods, prioritizing vegetables and fruits, and exercising strict moderation regarding sugar, salt, and fat intake.

"Butter and margarine are not foods to be feared, but neither are they foods meant to be consumed directly in large quantities," Professor Sri Anna clarified.

Nutritional science acknowledges that butter does contain trace amounts of beneficial micronutrients. According to data published by health outlets such as Chosun, butter naturally contains fat-soluble vitamins including Vitamin A, Vitamin B12, and minor quantities of Vitamin D and E. However, nutritionists universally agree that these vitamins can and should be obtained from safer, nutrient-dense primary food sources—such as lean meats, eggs, fish, dairy milk, and fresh vegetables—rather than relying on butter as a primary vitamin source, which introduces an unacceptable surplus of saturated fats.

Standard dietary guidelines recommend that total daily fat intake should constitute approximately 20 to 30 percent of an individual’s total daily energy expenditure. Crucially, public health recommendations emphasize that the majority of this fat intake should originate from unsaturated fat sources, such as olive oil, avocados, nuts, and fatty fish, rather than the saturated fats found abundantly in butter.

Broader Implications and the Need for Media Literacy

The emergence of the direct-butter-eating trend highlights a wider societal issue: the erosion of media literacy and critical nutritional awareness in the age of short-form video algorithms. Content creators often prioritize virality, shock value, and aesthetic presentation over consumer health and scientific accuracy.

As digital platforms continue to incubate extreme food trends, public health institutions face the ongoing challenge of disseminating evidence-based guidance to counteract viral misinformation. Experts stress that consumers must cultivate a discerning eye, evaluating food trends through the lens of nutritional science rather than social media popularity.

Ultimately, maintaining long-term health requires rejecting the pressure to participate in harmful online fads. By adhering to balanced dietary principles, understanding the biochemical realities of macronutrients, and exercising moderation, the public can safeguard their metabolic and cardiovascular well-being against the transient whims of internet culture.
