Tanjung Lesung, located in the Pandeglang Regency of Banten province, is poised to undergo a significant transformation in its tourism landscape, transitioning from a conventional coastal getaway into a premier hub for adrenaline-fueled adventure sports. The destination, recognized as a Special Economic Zone (SEZ) for tourism, is preparing to introduce skydiving and comprehensive sport aviation experiences, offering thrill-seekers the unique opportunity to parachute down while taking in panoramic aerial views of Banten’s pristine coastline and surrounding tropical waters.
This ambitious development is the result of a strategic partnership forged between PT Banten West Java (BWJ), the official manager and developer of the Tanjung Lesung Tourism SEZ, and PT Bro Skydive Indonesia. The formalization of this collaboration was marked by an official signing ceremony held in Jakarta, laying the groundwork for a multifaceted initiative that encompasses skydiving, sport aviation, and specialized aviation tourism within the coastal enclave.
Strategic Partnership and Project Scope
The integration of aerial sports is designed to diversify the recreational portfolio of Tanjung Lesung. Historically, the destination has drawn visitors primarily through its marine tourism, luxury resorts, and outdoor leisure activities, ranging from conventional water sports to island-hopping excursions. By incorporating skydiving, developers aim to capture a growing demographic of adventure tourists seeking high-impact experiences without having to travel to remote international destinations.
According to the leadership of PT Bro Skydive Indonesia, Tanjung Lesung presents a distinct geographical and infrastructural advantage that sets it apart from traditional drop zones. Fanny Kusuma Dewi, President Director of PT Bro Skydive Indonesia, emphasized that the location allows visitors to seamlessly blend high-altitude skydiving with a diverse array of marine and coastal activities.
"Beyond its natural beauty, Tanjung Lesung possesses the foundational infrastructure necessary to support a robust skydiving ecosystem. Once a skydiver lands, they can immediately transition into other recreational pursuits such as jet-skiing, sport fishing, snorkeling, or island hopping," Dewi stated in an official release detailing the collaboration. This multi-activity ecosystem is expected to increase the average length of stay for visitors, encouraging them to transition from single-day excursions to multi-day resort stays.
Infrastructure Upgrades and Spatial Allocation
To accommodate the logistical and safety demands of sport aviation, the project will heavily leverage the existing Salakanagara Tanjung Lesung Airport. As part of the partnership agreement, PT BWJ has allocated approximately nine hectares of dedicated land specifically designed to support skydiving operations, aviation training facilities, and associated tourism infrastructure.
The development plan entails a series of vital civil engineering enhancements to the airfield. These modifications include the establishment of a designated landing zone, the extension of the apron and taxiway systems, and critical adjustments to the primary runway. Kunto Wijoyo, Head of Salakanagara Tanjung Lesung Airport and Operations Director for BWJ, outlined the technical parameters of the airfield enhancements, noting that the runway will be extended by approximately 200 meters. Additionally, specialized administrative and operational structures will be constructed within the existing hangar facilities to house the skydiving operator’s headquarters, equipment storage, and briefing rooms.
These infrastructural adjustments are critical to ensuring that all skydiving and sport aviation activities adhere to stringent national and international aviation safety standards. The extended runway and improved taxiways will facilitate safer aircraft operations, accommodating the specialized jump planes required to transport skydivers to designated altitude plateaus.
Accessibility and Regional Infrastructure Integration
The success of new tourism developments in regional Indonesia frequently hinges upon broader transportation networks and accessibility. In the case of Tanjung Lesung, the aviation initiative coincides with major regional infrastructure projects designed to reduce travel times from the Jakarta metropolitan area, which serves as the primary feeder market for Banten’s tourism sector.
A critical catalyst for accessibility is the ongoing construction of the Serang-Panimbang Toll Road. The implementation of this highway network is structured in distinct phases, with Section 3A, connecting Cileles to Bojong, targeted for completion by November 2026. The entirety of the toll road project is projected for full operational readiness by the second quarter of 2027.
Upon the full commissioning of the Serang-Panimbang Toll Road, the travel time from Jakarta to Tanjung Lesung is anticipated to drop dramatically, averaging between two to two and a half hours. Transportation analysts point out that this reduction in travel friction will fundamentally alter visitor demographics, transforming Tanjung Lesung from a weekend destination requiring arduous travel into an easily accessible weekend escape for residents of the capital and surrounding urban centers. The synergy between improved road connectivity and the introduction of high-end adventure aviation is expected to position the region as one of the most competitive tourism SEZs in western Indonesia.
Timeline and Launch Projections
Despite the scale of the infrastructure modifications required, the project timeline is moving forward at an accelerated pace. PT Bro Skydive Indonesia has confirmed that construction and site preparation for the skydiving facilities will commence immediately.
Operators have established an aggressive operational target, aiming to make the skydiving experience commercially available to the public by the second week of December 2026. This launch window has been strategically chosen to precede the peak year-end holiday season, allowing the operators to capture holiday travelers looking for novel experiences.
"We are aiming for readiness and full operational status by December. We plan to open the drop zone just in time before the major year-end holiday period begins," Dewi noted regarding the rollout schedule.
Economic Implications and Future Outlook
The introduction of aviation tourism in Tanjung Lesung is expected to yield favorable economic ripples throughout the Pandeglang regency and the wider Banten province. By diversifying the local tourism product away from purely seasonal beach tourism, the initiative creates high-value jobs in specialized aviation sectors, hospitality, equipment maintenance, and small-to-medium enterprise (SME) support services.
Furthermore, the integration of an operational airfield capable of supporting sport aviation opens future avenues for general aviation development, flight training academies, and corporate charter services in the region. As the infrastructure matures alongside the Serang-Panimbang Toll Road, Tanjung Lesung stands as a prime example of strategic public-private collaboration aimed at modernizing Indonesia’s Special Economic Zones to meet the evolving demands of global and domestic travelers.
