The decision follows a high-level coordination meeting between the Ministry of Transportation, key maritime stakeholders, and specialized underwater salvage companies, which convened immediately after the conclusion of initial underwater damage and positioning surveys.
The tragic maritime incident involving KMP Virgo Transport 8 has triggered one of the most extensive search and rescue (SAR) operations in the region in recent years. As authorities race against time to locate the missing passengers and crew members, the operational focus has increasingly shifted toward complex underwater recovery missions. Navigational Support and Fleet Deployment at the Disaster Site

"KN Kunyit has successfully marked the framework of KMP Virgo Transport 8 using a Wreck Mark Buoy alongside temporary markers established around the coordinates. Furthermore, KN Kunyit remains stationed at the location to directly support the diving activities and continuous victim search operations executed by the Joint SAR Team," Hary stated in an official release.
In addition to KN Kunyit, other specialized vessels have been deployed to maintain a rigorous perimeter and sweep the surrounding waters. Capt. Rusmanu, Head of the Class II Tanjung Perak Coast Guard and Sea Patrol Base, outlined the continuous deployment of government assets. "KN Grantin P. 211 is actively conducting sweeps and observational patrols to locate victims within the immediate vicinity of the incident area. We remain fully committed to supporting the Joint SAR Team and earnestly hope that the search operations will proceed smoothly and efficiently," Capt. Rusmanu explained.
Current Status of the Manifest and Casualties
The human toll of the disaster remains a central focus of the ongoing multi-agency response. According to official manifests, KMP Virgo Transport 8 was carrying a total of 243 individuals on board at the time of the incident. As the search and rescue efforts stretch across multiple days, the Joint SAR Team has successfully accounted for 117 individuals, leaving a significant portion of the manifest still missing.
Of the 117 individuals located thus far, 108 survivors have been rescued, treated, and reunited with their families or provided with ongoing medical and psychological support. Tragically, 9 fatalities have been officially confirmed and recovered by the rescue teams. However, the operation remains heavily burdened by the fact that 126 individuals from the manifest remain unaccounted for, driving the urgency behind the newly announced underwater salvage and enhanced diving operations.
Discovery of Victims Inside the Submerged Wreckage
In a significant operational breakthrough, the Joint SAR Team—bolstered by specialized Indonesian Navy (TNI AL) deep-sea divers—successfully located and retrieved three additional victims trapped directly inside the submerged hull of the vessel.
The extraction of these three victims required highly technical underwater maneuvers. Once brought to the surface, the victims were initially transferred to KRI Gusti Ngurah Rai, a modern Indonesian Navy guided-missile frigate operating as a mobile command and medical platform in the area. From KRI Gusti Ngurah Rai, an interception protocol was executed to transfer the remains to KN SAR Kamajaya.
KN SAR Kamajaya subsequently set a direct course toward the Trisakti Pier in Banjarmasin. Upon docking at the facility, the three victims were immediately transferred into the custody of medical and forensic specialists, who transported them directly to the Bhayangkara Hospital in Banjarmasin for comprehensive forensic examination, positive identification, and eventual release to their respective families.

Providing further insights into the strategic direction of the ongoing mission, First Admiral Bramantyo, Director of Operations for Basarnas (National Search and Rescue Agency), emphasized that the SAR operation is being conducted with the highest degree of urgency and professionalism. Speaking through official channels, Bramantyo reaffirmed that the salvage operation for KM Virgo Transport 8 runs parallel to the life-saving and recovery efforts.
"The Joint SAR Team successfully found three victims inside the ship through a complex diving operation. All three have been safely evacuated and are now being transported to Bhayangkara Hospital for further processing and identification. Meanwhile, the salvage process for KM Virgo Transport 8 is still actively ongoing," Bramantyo stated.
He further underscored that all participating elements within the joint task force maintain continuous communication and adapt their tactics based on real-time environmental factors and underwater obstacles. "We will continue to exert our maximum effort. Every single development and piece of data gathered in the field serves as the foundational basis for the team to determine subsequent search and evacuation steps," he concluded.
Logistical Preparations for Onshore Forensic Handling
Recognizing the logistical demands of handling a mass casualty incident, authorities have taken proactive measures to ensure the integrity of human remains recovered from the tropical waters. To support the onshore post-mortem examinations and forensic autopsies, PT Meratus Line has supplied two 20-foot refrigerated containers (reefer containers), which have already been successfully delivered to the Bhayangkara Hospital in Banjarmasin.
These reefer containers are vital for maintaining optimal temperatures to preserve the remains during the identification phase, which can often be protracted due to the condition of victims recovered from prolonged submersion. In addition to the units stationed at the hospital, maritime authorities are coordinating the deployment of two additional reefer units directly onto navigation vessels. This strategic addition is designed to streamline the cold-chain logistics, allowing for the seamless transfer of recovered remains from the remote sinking site directly to the port facilities without compromising forensic integrity.
