Double Volcanic Eruption Strikes Indonesia as Mount Anak Krakatau and Mount Ibu Blow Within Hours of Each Other

The Geological Agency of Indonesia has confirmed a rare sequence of simultaneous volcanic unrest after two of the country’s most active stratovolcanoes erupted within hours of each other on Monday, October 5, 2026. The geological events, occurring thousands of kilometers apart across the Indonesian archipelago, have triggered immediate emergency protocols, heightened alert levels, and strict exclusion zones to protect residents, fishermen, and tourists.

The first eruption originated from Mount Anak Krakatau, situated in the Sunda Strait between the islands of Java and Sumatra, during the late evening. Just hours later, Mount Ibu, located in the northwestern part of Halmahera Island in North Maluku province, followed suit with an explosive ash-emission event. While neither eruption has caused immediate reports of casualties or severe structural damage, the double event has reignited concerns regarding Indonesia’s vulnerability to seismic and volcanic hazards, given its position along the hyper-active Pacific Ring of Fire.

Chronology of the Events

The sequence of events began on Monday evening in the Sunda Strait. According to data released by the Geological Agency under the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Mount Anak Krakatau unleashed an explosive pulse at 20:28 Western Indonesia Time (WIB).

Seismograph recordings at the volcano’s observation post captured the eruption signal, which registered a maximum amplitude of 33 millimeters and persisted for approximately 61 seconds. Due to the marine environment surrounding the volcano, maritime authorities immediately issued warnings to commercial vessels and local fishermen to steer clear of the immediate vicinity of the caldera.

Just over two and a half hours later, geological unrest shifted to the eastern wing of the archipelago. At 23:09 Eastern Indonesia Time (WIT)—equivalent to 21:09 WIB—Mount Ibu in West Halmahera erupted violently. The volcano thrust a dense column of dark volcanic ash approximately 500 meters into the atmosphere above its summit.

The eruption of Mount Ibu was similarly captured by local seismic equipment, registering a maximum amplitude of 28 millimeters with a duration of 45 seconds. Prevailing wind conditions carried the ash plume predominantly toward the northern sector of the mountain, prompting urgent advisory notices for surrounding communities.

Geological Context and Background of the Volcanoes

Both Mount Anak Krakatau and Mount Ibu possess long, well-documented histories of persistent volcanic activity, making them subjects of continuous scientific monitoring by the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG).

Mount Anak Krakatau, translating literally to "Child of Krakatoa," is the offspring of the legendary Krakatoa volcano, whose catastrophic eruption in 1883 altered global weather patterns and claimed tens of thousands of lives. Emerging from the sea in 1927 within the caldera left behind by its predecessor, Anak Krakatau has continuously built and destroyed itself through episodic dome growth and flank collapses. A notable flank collapse in December 2018 triggered a devastating tsunami along the coastlines of Banten and Lampung, underscoring the severe secondary hazards associated with submarine and coastal volcanic activity in the Sunda Strait.

On the other hand, Mount Ibu is a stratovolcano that forms a prominent landmark on the northwest coast of Halmahera Island. The summit is truncated, featuring a complex configuration of overlapping craters. Historical records show that Mount Ibu has experienced frequent eruptive phases characterized by Strombolian activity, ash explosions, and lava dome extrusions. Because of its remote location, eruptions at Mount Ibu rarely threaten large metropolitan centers directly, but they frequently disrupt local agricultural activities, air navigation, and rural settlements situated within the volcanic valleys.

Official Safety Zones and Mitigation Measures

In response to the back-to-back eruptions, the Geological Agency swiftly established strict perimeter boundaries to safeguard human life.

For Mount Anak Krakatau, authorities have implemented a mandatory two-kilometer exclusion zone measured outward from the active crater. The public, tourists, visitors, and independent mountain climbers are strictly prohibited from approaching the volcanic cone or conducting any recreational or commercial activities within this perimeter. Given the volcano’s unstable structure and history of sudden, unannounced phreatomagmatic explosions, maritime operators have also been advised to maintain a safe distance from the surrounding waters.

For Mount Ibu, the safety protocols are more extensive due to the prevailing wind directions and topographical layout. The Geological Agency has enforced a two-kilometer radius ban around the active crater, alongside an extended sectoral safety zone stretching 3.5 kilometers to the north, directly in line with the volcano’s structural crater opening.

Furthermore, the agency issued health advisories for communities residing downwind from Mount Ibu. Residents caught in potential ashfall zones have been explicitly instructed to wear protective respiratory gear, such as face masks, and to use protective eyewear to prevent severe irritation caused by abrasive volcanic ash particles.

Administrative Coordination and the Fight Against Misinformation

As emergency management teams coordinate response measures on the ground, regional governments have been urged to maintain seamless communication channels with federal scientific bodies. The local government of West Halmahera Regency has been instructed to maintain continuous, real-time coordination with the PVMBG headquarters in Bandung, West Java, as well as the local Mount Ibu Observation Post located in Gam Ici village. This direct information pipeline is viewed as crucial for ensuring that evacuation orders or alert level upgrades can be communicated to vulnerable villages without delay.

Concurrently, authorities have expressed strong concern regarding the potential spread of unverified information and panic-inducing hoaxes across social media platforms. Following high-profile natural disasters in the past, misinformation regarding impending mega-tsunamis or catastrophic secondary eruptions has frequently circulated online, causing unwarranted panic among local populations.

"All parties are urged to maintain a calm and orderly atmosphere within the community, to refrain from disseminating false information, and to avoid being easily provoked by unverified reports," the Geological Agency stated in its official release. Citizens have been explicitly reminded to rely solely on updates provided by official government channels, including the PVMBG, the National Board for Disaster Management (BNPB), and local disaster mitigation agencies (BPBD).

Broader Implications and Economic Considerations

The simultaneous eruptions of Mount Anak Krakatau and Mount Ibu serve as a stark reminder of Indonesia’s unique geological reality. Straddling the convergence zone of three major tectonic plates—the Indo-Australian, Eurasian, and Pacific plates—Indonesia encompasses nearly 130 active volcanoes, the highest concentration of active volcanic systems of any nation globally.

While these recurring eruptions are a natural part of the planet’s tectonic crustal recycling, they present persistent logistical challenges for national infrastructure, regional tourism, and local economies. Ashfall events routinely disrupt regional agriculture, coating staple crops in acidic particulate matter that can damage foliage and contaminate local water sources. Moreover, commercial aviation routes across the Indonesian archipelago must constantly adjust flight paths to circumvent drifting ash plumes, which pose severe hazards to jet engines.

As monitoring teams continue to analyze seismic data streams from both the Sunda Strait and Halmahera, the overarching focus remains on proactive mitigation, public compliance with safety radiuses, and the steady dissemination of factual, science-based updates to ensure community resilience in the face of ongoing geological activity.
